Climbing To The Front Page

If you have ever dabbled with websites or created online content before, you’ve probably heard the term “SEO” thrown around. But as far as you’re concerned, you haven’t the slightest idea on what it means or what it does. Yet, you know it’s somehow important to you and your website.

Today, that changes.

What Is SEO?

SEO is an acronym for “Search Engine Optimization”

A search engine is a software designed to carry out web searches. The popular ones go by the names of Google, Yahoo, or Bing. You’ve probably heard of them.

As to what SEO does:

It is the process of increasing the amount of website traffic by improving the visibility of the website or page to users of a search engine.”

In other words: The method to organically improve your website’s chances of being found on the internet. After all, what is the point of a beautifully designed website if nobody can find it?

How Does SEO Work?

SEO works by tweaking the content of your website, making it more appealing to the search engine in the hopes of being ranked highly on the SERP.

What is SERP?

SERP stands for “Search Engine Results Page”

“Search Engine? I remember that! That’s Google and Yahoo right?”

Correct.

(And don’t worry, there are no more scary acronyms ahead.)

After you’ve typed in what you were searching for, the SERP is where you’ll end up in. It’s the page that shows you all the possible results you might be looking for. It’s also where most people don’t bother looking beyond page 2 – and for good reason, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

Websites that are easy to read, full of relevant information, and popular (have many external links pointing at it) are likely to end up on the first page of results. Websites that paid to be at the front don’t count. Remember: SEO is about organically getting there.

Why Is SEO Important For My Website?

Since SEO helps you by making it easier for web-users to find your website, you’ll get all the benefits that come with being easily visible.

You’ll get more traffic by being easier to find. The more traffic you get, the more likely someone will stay and browse your website. Once you’ve managed to get visitors to stay and look around, and handful of possibilities could happen:

  • If your website’s content is useful, they might share it with their network (further improving your site’s visibility).
  • They might decide to subscribe to your newsletter or free gift in exchange for an email address (more opportunities to market).
  • They might even outright purchase your product or service!

In short, SEO is important for your website because it can ultimately influence the performance of your business online.

Getting Ahead

An optimized website is also more likely to be put ahead of one that isn’t. This means with proper SEO, you can have an edge over your competitors by having more traffic to your website over your competition because you are ranked higher on the SERP. Even if both of you are selling the same things!

This is why if your website is on the 2nd page of Google (for example), it’s highly unlikely anyone will come looking for you. Not when potentially better results are displayed on the first page!

There you have it. All the basics you need to know about SEO and how it affects you and your website.
